Tired of the city buzz? Vizag is surrounded by stunning hill stations, waterfalls, and heritage towns perfect for a 1-2 day escape. Here are the top weekend getaways within 200 km of Visakhapatnam.

1. Lambasingi — "Kashmir of Andhra Pradesh" (107 km)

India's lowest temperature in AP (0-5°C in winter!). Lambasingi is a tiny tribal village perched in the Eastern Ghats. Dense fog, pine forests, and starlit nights make it a magical escape. Stay in tribal homestays (₹500-1,000/night). Best from November to January. The drive through Chintapalle forests is spectacular.

2. Araku Valley (112 km)

The most popular getaway — coffee plantations, Borra Caves, tribal culture, and bamboo chicken. Take the scenic Kirandul Express train (₹50-200). Stay 1-2 nights to fully explore. Budget: ₹3,000-6,000 for a couple including stay, food, and activities.

3. Srikakulam (108 km)

A historic town with ancient Shiva temples (Srikurmam — only Kurma avatar temple in India). The Kalingapatnam Beach here is virgin and untouched. Local Srikakulam cuisine is distinct — try the Pesarattu and Pulihora. Can be done as a day trip.

4. Rajahmundry (188 km)

The cultural capital of Andhra Pradesh. Famous for the Godavari River, Papi Hills boat ride, ISKCON Temple, and Dowleswaram Barrage. The Godavari pushkara ghat sunset is unforgettable. November-February is the best time. Budget: ₹4,000-7,000 for weekend.

5. Vanjangi — "Vizag's Meghalaya" (95 km)

A relatively new discovery — Vanjangi offers breathtaking views of a sea of clouds below you at sunrise. Trek through tribal villages and coffee estates. No hotels yet — carry camping gear or stay at Paderu (30 km). Only accessible by 4x4 or bike. November to February only.

6. Maredumilli Eco Tourism (200 km)

For nature lovers — dense forests, waterfalls (Jalatarangini, Amruthadhara), and riverside camping. AP Forest Dept runs eco-lodges (₹1,200-2,500/night). Activities include kayaking, rope course, and night jungle walks. Book through AP Tourism website.

Quick Packing List

  • Warm jacket (even in summer — hills get cold at night)
  • Comfortable trekking shoes
  • Power bank (poor network in tribal areas)
  • Cash — ATMs are scarce in rural areas
  • Insect repellent and first-aid kit
  • Camera with extra batteries
  • Download offline maps on Google Maps
