Srikakulam: The Andhra Pradesh govt has constituted a special court to conduct trials in cases pending against senior Maoist leader Dunna Kesava Rao alias Azad in Srikakulam district. The seventh additional district and sessions court has been designated as a special court and is set to begin hearing over 40 pending cases against Azad from July 7.Azad, a prominent Maoist leader who surrendered before the then united Andhra Pradesh police on May 18, 2011, with the support of politician Juttu Jagannayakulu, was a key member of the Odisha State Organising Committee (ORSOC) and the Andhra-Odisha Border Special Zonal Committee (AOBSZC).Though he surrendered under a rehabilitation initiative, Odisha Police took him into custody as he was facing over 100 cases, including those linked to the 2008 killing of VHP leader Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati and the Nayagarh armoury loot. He was lodged in Jharpada Special Jail in Bhubaneswar and faced trial in more than 45 cases in Odisha. He had also staged a hunger strike, alleging delays in court proceedings.The AP govt constituted the special court through a notification issued by law and legislative affairs department secretary G Pratibha Bharati under Section 10 of the AP Civil Courts Act, 1972, following directions from the high court. The court is expected to take up over 16 cases registered in Andhra Pradesh.At the time of his arrest, Azad was considered one of the top Maoist leaders in the region and headed the outfit’s military wing in Odisha. His mother had submitted representations to both Andhra Pradesh and Odisha govts seeking his release.
