Visakhapatnam: A pilgrimage turned tragic late Monday night when three persons were killed on the spot and several others sustained injuries after a speeding truck rammed into their SUV near Chelluru village on the outskirts of Vizianagaram.The deceased were identified as Chintapalli Rambabu (50), Majji Narayana Rao (46), and Botsa Mohan Naidu (9), all residents of Majjipeta village in Padmanabham mandal of Visakhapatnam district.According to police, the group of 13 devotees from Majjipeta was travelling to Rayagada in [Odisha](https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/odisha) to offer prayers at Maa Majhighariani Temple when they halted their vehicle briefly near Chelluru. A lorry, allegedly travelling at excessive speed, lost control and crashed into the stationary SUV.Upon receiving information about the accident, police personnel rushed to the spot and shifted the injured to a hospital in Vizianagaram for treatment. Vizianagaram SP AR Damodhar directed officials to take necessary measures to prevent similar accidents along the route. Preliminary investigations suggest that over-speeding by the truck driver was the primary cause of the accident.The stretch between the Y-Junction in Vizianagaram and Chelluru is narrow and lacks adequate street lighting, making it prone to frequent accidents. A case has been registered, and further investigation is underway.
