Bhogapuram International Airport: Phase 1 Opening & Connectivity Guide
The Bhogapuram International Airport, officially known as GMR Visakhapatnam International Airport, is set to redefine aviation and connectivity in northern Andhra Pradesh. Located around 40 km from the heart of Visakhapatnam, this state-of-the-art greenfield airport project is currently being developed rapidly by the GMR Group.
Phase 1 Opening & Scope
Phase 1 of the airport is slated for a grand opening by mid-to-late 2026. The initial phase is designed to comfortably handle 6 million passengers annually. Upon full completion of all subsequent phases, the airport will have an ultimate capacity exceeding 40 million passengers per year, featuring separate domestic and international terminals, advanced cargo systems, and a luxury duty-free retail zone.
6-Lane Express Highway Connectivity
To ensure seamless travel from Visakhapatnam city center to the new airport, a dedicated 6-lane beach corridor express highway is under construction. This highway will cut down travel time from RK Beach to Bhogapuram to under 30 minutes, bypassing heavy industrial traffic. Furthermore, a proposed metro rail route extension will connect the airport directly to the city core.
Economic Impact and Real Estate Surge
The airport has already triggered a massive real estate and commercial boom in the Bhogapuram, Tagarapuvalasa, and Anandapuram corridors. Major developers are launching premium gated communities and villa projects in anticipation of high-net-worth individuals moving in. The cargo terminal is also set to turn Vizag into a prominent logistics hub for seafood, pharma, and agricultural exports.
